The splash was replaced by a thump!
I heard there were plans for a fundraiser to replace the platform that was destroyed in a September storm but I didn't know the details. Luckily I was driving by Newell Stadium and saw a commotion. There on the field was the Greasy Pole stretched over padding with a bunch of colorful characters wandering the gridiron. For a $25.00 donation anyone who wished could walk the pole. No need for me to head out early and find a spot to tie up my boat, just walk up to the end of the pole without the Coast Guard kicking me out! I could see this spreading all over the country with the world championships held in Gloucester! ESPN could cover the "Greasy Pole Walk of the Week"! And the "Play of the Day" could be "Walk of the Day"!
Three groups walked the pole and I was there for the last two. If you would like to donate to this Gloucester tradition please do by sending a check to Greasy Pole Fund, care of Cape Ann Savings Bank, 19 Main St., Gloucester 01930, or designate the check for the Greasy Pole Fund and send it to the St. Peter's Fiesta Committee, P.O. Box 3105, Gloucester, 01930
