With Maine groundfish boats unloading here due to a Maine rule that prohibits them from landing lobster, New Jersey boats offload their scallop catch here rather than New Bedford due to slow fish processors there. These factors are a few reasons why Gloucester is such a valuable fishing port. One of the scallop boat captains says it's more of an advantage to steam 139 miles from the scallop grounds to offload here than to wait around an extra day or two just to offload and get ice there. No one wants their catch to spoil while waiting around, time is money so they say.
