As Hurricane Irene approaches I couldn't help but think of the so called "calm before the storm" as life goes on. All we can do is prepare and wait to see what havoc the storm will create. I secured my trash barrel and put away the deck chairs. Then I headed to my boat and sealed all the open rod holders that open up to the bilge. Folded up the Bimini top and stowed the side curtains. Made sure the bilge pump switch is on stand-by mode, deployed the port side fenders in case other boats or floats breaks away and checked my doubled up dock lines. In the water she'll stay, I figured if I brought her home the falling branches from the surrounding trees would cause more damage.
And a safety reminder:
The temptation is great to photograph and to watch the angry seas.....STAY AWAY! Even if you think you are at a safe distance YOU ARE NOT! I've seen the ocean do some strange things during Nor'easters, you'll be surprised on it's reach. And when it grabs you it doesn't let go! People have been lost in lesser conditions.
This is just a glimpse of what the ocean can do.
Schooner "Thomas E. Lannon" heading in.
Happy passengers.
I got to get them all in!
Heading to the dock.
Harbor shuttle "Lady Jillian".
"Tully IV"
"Miss Carla"
I think they need a bigger boat!
The sterns of schooners "Ardelle" and "Spirit of Massachusetts".
"Chilly Willy" gets a tow.
Chopping ice on Fishermen's Wharf.
"Midnight Sun" pulls away.
A time of calmness.
