Fishing is so vital to this community, it's the fishermen,dock workers and a host of others who keeps the heritage going. For years fish stocks declined to the point of government intervention to institute rules and regulations. The rules were never easy for the fishermen but they knew more than others it was a necessary step to assure continued fishing. Now according to science the fish stocks have rebounded yet fishermen are strangled by ever tightened regulations. Some say most fish stocks are 76% above sustainable limits yet the fishermen are only allowed about 23% to land!
Adjustments need to be made, the imbalance is forcing fishermen to re-think their livelihood. What is needed to assure jobs and a way of life is a correction of this balance to allow the fish AND the fishermen to survive!
