Water.......You pour it into a glass and it just sits there, add millions of gallons ,throw in wind and tide and you got an unstoppable force. That's what happened during the Blizzard of 2010. In my lifetime the Lanes Cove Breakwater has been damaged and rebuilt several times. And there is a reason for that, it's a poor design! The Dog Bar Breakwater on the other hand has stood up in that time frame except for a loose granite block here and there. The Dog Bar Breakwater which protects Gloucester Harbor is more prone to a powerful surf than the Lanes Cove Breakwater is due to it's exposure. But it's rip rap outer wall rises 45 degrees to meet the top of the structure. The Lanes Cove Breakwater's rip rap outer wall,also about 45 degrees stops at the normal high water mark. Above that is a 15' verticle wall, when the storm surge rises the full force of Ipswich Bay is blasted against the top wall, damage is inevitable!
