What a night it was, winds gusted to 80mph while sustained winds averaged 58mph! A satuating rain that softened the soil caused many trees around Cape Ann to fall. My house shook like it never shook before....well, since I added a second story in 2004. I was lucky, we only lost power for a few seconds....several times. The back yard willow tree lost a few branches and I had to look for the cover of my trash barrel. And most amazing is the cover on my boat weathered the storm with no problem! I awoke to the sounds of chain saws and the sound of a pretty rough surf along the shore. It's not easy to get around to see the damage and it's not a good idea. With many trees and power lines down many roads are closed. Taking photos of the surf was a challenge with a heavy salt mist all about but I tried the best I could.

You hit the spots I couln't get to this morning. I did manage to get to Eastern Point for a few minutes before work. I had to force myself not to got down Atlantic because I knew if I did, I'd be late!
Great shots of the storm!! Thank-you for giving me a glimpse of the action taking place as I have not been able to go out for a few days - been sick. I recently joined the Blog group - I'm an artist and love painting the surf, seacoast and beaches. Again, it was a joy veiwing your beautiful photos.

Looks just like here Jay. Lots of damage and lots of people without power.
I took some time to head out to the beach this morning and was impressed with the surf. The waves were really rolling. Caught a great sunrise though.

The most important to keep in mind when taking surf photos is not to get too close! Many people over the years have been swept away. Every so often a rogue wave will hit where yo never expect it to. Good rule of thumb....If you think you are 50' from the danger zone....you are not!
Great advice about the danger zone. Was photgraphing the surf in York Harbor, ME, Nubble lighthouse, a decade ago, after a February Nor Easter. Standing on rocks well above the surf zone, clicking away, when all of a sudden my feet and shins went numb. Looked down in time to catch my camera bag from washing away in knee deep water. Cold and wet drive back to town.
