35 mph NW winds, gusts to over 70mph has caused some damage around Cape Ann. Gloucester's O'Maley Middle School had it's roof ripped off around 4:00pm. The attached rink was evacuated as a precaution. Driving around I saw many roof shingles and tree branches scattered about.

Looking at that roof makes me think I should keep an eye on mine
What is the roof made out of? It looks like a tarp in the pictures.
That wind was brutal! Lets hope we don't have another day like that in a loooong time!
That's a rubber membrane Sharon. Many public, industrial and commercial buildings use that type of roofing. When firefighters got to the roof they discovered exposed insulation! A failure like that is very rare.
Jay,
did the roof have rocks on top of it to hold it down or was it held down by 1 way vents? I am a commercial roofer and I am interested in knowing what kind of system it was.
thanks!
I've never been an industrial roofer but my guess would be it wasn't the type that used roofing stone....I didn't see any on the ground. I believe the rubber membrane was secured with adhesive.
