It happened around 8:00 am this morning when Gloucester was rocked by a house explosion at 76 Eastern Ave. The home of police officer Wayne Sargent was leveled and he was flown to a hospital in Boston. He was the only one home at the time and had arrived home earlier after completing his shift. My wife's aunt and uncle live directly across the street from the explosion and were home along with their grand daughter. Luckily they weren't hurt. But several windows were shattered by flying debris and some of the siding and a shutter was damaged. Her uncle is a retired Gloucester firefighter and got on the phone right away to call the fire department.
Update 1/26/09:
Wayne is doing better but there's a long way to go. He opened his eyes this morning and it looks like his eyesight and hearing is coming along. In the meantime his fellow officers are starting a collection for their fellow police officer. If you would like to contribute the address is: "The Gloucester Fund...Wayne Sargent" 45 Middle Street Gloucester,Ma 01930

Wow! How terrible. Let us know what happened.
I looked at these the other day but just now realized you were looking out the windows of your relatives house to take most of the shots! And what shots they are! Glad they are both okay.
Any word on the officer who survived the blast? Hard to believe anyone could survive something so devastating.
And the house with a corner missing, I take it that is not the relatives home, right? Just a neighbor.

Officer Sargent was up-graded to "Good" condition yesterday, doctors expect a complete recovery! My relatives house is directly across the street from the blast. That house with the damaged corner sits next to the blast site.If you look close, some of those shots I took were through broken glass. There was broken glass everywhere. In fact broken glass went through the bedroom door and into the hall and into the romm on the backside of the house!
