A New Fishing Venture!

After moving to the revitalized Fishermen's Wharf in June the Giacalone family on Wednesday began their new venture as "BASE Gloucester". An auction house with ties to another large New England fishing port, New Bedford, Ma. Technology from businessmen Richard and Raymond Canastra of the Whaling City Auction will tie the two together.
I stopped by on Tuesday to check on the boys.

The Dangers of Facebook!

On 12/5 I posted one of my favorite images that I took during a snow storm 12/19/08 and suddenly on Facebook someone else is claiming credit for it! Back when I originally posted it on my blog on 12/19/08 I reduced the size by cropping. But back then I didn't realize the importance of adding a watermark, a signature on the photo itself. Some think with no watermark it's free to use at their will but that's not the case. Each photo has in-bedded within EXIF data, properties that tie it to the camera, time, date and settings. A "fingerprint" if you will that stays with the original image. Here's another fact.....The photo I posted on 12/19/08 as I mentioned is smaller due to how I cropped it. When I re-posted the image 12/5/11 I expanded the crop to add more surroundings. You can't do that unless you have the original!

I take pride in my photography and the Cape Ann area and love to share it. There is no way I would ever consider to post someone else's photo without their permission and take credit for it! Not only for moral reasons but it's also against the law!

Paint Factory in the Waning Light !

Standing watch over the entrance of Gloucester's inner harbor the Tarr and Wonson Paint Factory awaits her new life. The birth place of marine anti fouling paint is slowly in the process of becoming a marine research center. Ocean Alliance continues to raise funds to make the old Paint Factory their world headquarters. The other day as I sized up the approaching sunset, it became apparent it was going to be a ho-hum affair. The sunset needed something and by the time I settled on the Paint Factory the sun had set. But with the red brick and the pastel sky I thought it still would be interesting.
